Missionary Focus Weekend: The Maldives

MALDIVES.jpg

Last night, in the first of our Missionary Focus meetings, we heard from AsiaLink about the great need of The Maldives. It’s a country most commonly associated with luxury holidays and private islands, but the Maldives is one of the least reached nations on earth, and not just because of its size and isolation in the middle of the Indian Ocean.

These islands claim to be 100% Muslim, and while AsiaLink is aware of a handful of Christians on the islands, the government tries to prevent any religion other than Islam from gaining a foothold. Several attempts to bring the gospel to these islands have failed, and now AsiaLink is working on new projects to reach the people of the Maldives.

We were challenged by the huge need of these people, and encouraged by the great work that is currently taking place. Let’s remember this people-group and organisation in prayer.

Pray for:

  • Muslims in the Maldives to come to Christ in faith

  • more missionaries and Christians to serve there to see the gospel spread

  • the protection of the few Christians in the nation

  • the Bible translators as they endeavour to finish the first Bible in Dhivehi, the language of the Maldives

  • the government, that it would soften its stance, allowing the Christian faith to be freely expressed and practised

A freewill offering plate was set out in the foyer for the work of this organisation. Further donations can be made and more information is available on AsiaLink.org
